Agawam

The Agawam are Massachusetts’s indigenous people, part of the Algonquian linguistical family. They were agriculturalists who worshiped the Star Giants – supreme beings who created the world and man for their amusement. They created sacred sites to pay homage – usually in places where there was clear access to the stars. One ritual involved trapping a sacrifice within an open top cage of stakes and summoning a creature from the stars to consume them to preserve cosmic balance. Key to them was a spirit called Gloosep, the trickster.

Milk Island was a sacred site and that records are available for others. Their last known settlement was on Wigwam Hill in Ipswich.
